    Title and Credits
    ARCH 551. Photography and Digital Media. 3 credits.

    Format
    One 1.5 hour lecture and one 1.5 hour lab meeting per week

    Meeting Time and Place
    TR 12:30 AM - 1:45 PM. In general, Thursday meetings will be in room 105 Campbell; Tuesday meetings will be in room C Campbell. Special meeting times for reviews will be announced.

    Prerequisites
    Approval of instructor. Previous experience with photography is desirable. Student must own or have access to a digital camera with manual controls and the ability to shoot raw format, preferably a single lens reflex camera.

    Objectives
    The course seeks to give students the ability to conceive and create digital photographic imagery with control and sophistication. The course emphasizes development of digital techniques through work with photographs taken by the student in order to integrate the understanding of digital and photographic media in achieving graphic and design intent. Methods will include production and presentation of images for printed hard copy and for the world wide web.

    Assignments
    The course includes the following types of assignments:

    • Lab assignments: Most lab meetings involve an activity to perform during the meeting time. Materials will be collected at the end of the meeting. Some labs will also include brief written pre-lab assignments, to be completed before the lab meeting.

    • Projects: The course includes regular projects given at intervals of one to two weeks. These include shooting assignments for collecting and producing photographs, as well as processing assignments for producing imagery from the photographs.

    • Final Project: The course concludes with a final project and presentation to bring together methods developed during the course.

    Books and Readings

    The following book is required:

    Real World Digital Photography. 2nd Edition. Katrin Eismann, Sean Duggan, Tim Grey.
    Peach Pit Press, 2003.
    This book is available at the Newcomb bookstore, as well as bn.com and amazon.com. It is also available online from UVa computers.

    Other readings will be distributed as handouts, put on library reserve, or accessed through the web.

    Grading
    Grading will be based on the following approximate proportions:

    Labs 30%
    Assignments 40%
    Final Project 20%
    Attitude and Participation 10%
