This course arose from twenty years of working with computers and cameras in teaching and documenting architectural structures. I owe much of my early tutelage in digital imaging and the web to Christie Stephenson and Thorny Staples, who showed me the potential in the early stages of the game, back when Mosaic was pretty cool. The grant I received from UVa's Teaching and Technology Initiative was also instrumental in giving me the opportunity to learn through doing, gaining invaluable experience and judgment.
The course owes its biggest debt to Scott Smith, without whom it would never have happened. In addition to being my office partner for several years, Scott was my teaching partner when the course was first conceived and offered in the fall of 1999. Scott taught me new ways to see and to teach, ways that I continue to learn.
