Policies of Use
Policy of Use
For information on Hardware and Software configurations at the school, please refer to the Facilities page of this web site. This page serves to set forth all policies regarding the use of computer equipment in the school.
So as to ensure a reliable computing environment and the equitable distribution of its resources, certain policies have been adopted by the School's Computer Committee. Rules of Use:
- Copyright law forbids the copying or 'borrowing' of any installed software programs.
- Food and drink are forbidden in clusters as they can damage computer equipment.
- All personal files are to be saved in designated directories only on the file server(s).
- Unauthorized reconfiguration of hardware or software is not permitted.
- Unauthorized modification of other users' accounts or files is not permitted.
- Giving out your account password, or the use of another's password is not permitted.
- Display or printing of graphic materials that might contribute to an atmosphere of sexual harassment or intimidation will not be tolerated (see UVA Graduate and Undergraduate Catalogues).
- Computers or other resources shall not be used for any activity deemed illegal under federal, state, or university laws and regulations.
- Facilities and access to them shall not be "abused" in any form, including the infliction of physical harm as well as activity to the detrement of others ability to use the equipment.
- The School reserves the right to revoke a user account if rules of use are violated.
Accounts
All parties interested in using the School's computing resources are asked to register for an account. An account should be activated within 48 hours of the request. At this time, email will be sent to candidates specifying their login name, password, and access codes to the clusters. Alternatively, applicants can visit Room 131 during office hours.
An account entitles students to login to any computer in the school and access all file service, scanning, and printing resources therein. Accounts expire at the end of the academic year of a student's graduation. Special requests may allow renewal for short periods of time after graduation.
Note: The School of Architecture reserves the right to terminate any account at any time when circumstances warrant.
Accessibility & Priority
All registered faculty, staff and students of the School of Architecture have 24 hour access to computing resources. Specific conditions of use are described below.
Computer Labs: Rooms 130, 139 and 402
General Computer Graphics Labs priority of machines is determined as follows:
- Students enrolled in computer related subjects involving CAD, animation, GIS, imaging, etc.
- Students using computationally intensive computer graphics applications (Desktop Publishing, Photoshop, Spreadsheets, Databases)
- specifically authorized research projects
- Three hour maximum continuous use is permitted unless equipment is free
The Digital Classroom: Room 105
This room is only open for regularly scheduled classes. This is not an open lab. Use beyond regularly scheduled classes must be arranged for by a faculty member and the room must be monitored by said faculty member during all times of use.
