Update

Construction began in late June 2006 with the east and south additions completed in summer, 2008. The landscape redesign will be completed soon thereafter.

As of August 2008: Both the south addition and the Victor and Sono Elmaleh East Tower are substantially completed. Occupancy permits have been obtained and faculty members are moving into the new offices. Reviews of summer studio work are taking place in the new spaces. Planting of the new landscape design, however, will largely be reserved for the favorable weather this fall.

The Building Additions

Since the original construction of Campbell Hall in 1970, the school’s life, and the occupant demands and expectations of its residents, have changed. Growth in the school’s faculty and student populations, changes to curricular structure and goals, the evolution of the underlying values held collectively by the members of the school community now necessitate additional space for varied uses. In the past two decades, the size of the student body has almost doubled, while the faculty has nearly tripled in number. The introduction of graduate programs in architecture and landscape architecture has additionally expanded demand for design space. Similar growth in the planning and architectural history programs now necessitates additional classroom and seminar space.

Design+Build Projects

In 1999, before the building additions commenced, Dean Karen Van Lengen initiated a program of Design+Build projects in and around the school. These projects, developed by faculty members in collaboration with students, build out the space around Campbell Hall.
