    Trusses: Profile and Layout

    Profile

    The profile of a truss may be chosen to account for the distribution of shear and moment for the span.

    • If the distance between the chords varies as the moment diagram varies, then the horizontal component of the chord force will be constant throughout the truss.

    • It often makes sense to have the profile of the truss match or approximate the shape of the moment diagram, although other factors may dictate the profile.

    The spacing and layout of a large truss must be woven into the modular rhythm of a complete structural system:
