Seventy Re-Imagined Dimensions

Carlo Pelliccia Traveling Fellowship
Summer 2004, Rome, Italy

by Yvi Nam Nguyen

“The landscape of the city is an episodic layering of permanence and transience. Its ground manifests geological and structural transformation. Carved into this substantial foundation are imprints from the more ephemeral currents of water and occupation.
I took to Rome as a place deeply embedded in time, marked by partly buried, partly excavated roots. I seek the scratches and indentations that reveal a city subject to continuous replacement, molded by constant and momentary pressures.”

timber, salt and stone: bridges of the tiber river valley

Carlo Pelliccia Traveling Fellowship
Summer 2003, Rome, Italy

by Spencer Haynesworth

“... I focused particular attention on the bridges that span the Tiber River. I investigated, through drawing, how each bridge gathers the landscape around the river, marks a permanent location and site in the midst of an undulating watershed, extends, spans, connects, and leads to places beyond each respective bank, sets up new horismos for those who encounter it, and as sacred structure, gathers the divinities of he place through drawing, I attempted o reÑestablish a rapport with this ancient river conventu, its connection to the city of Rome and the Tiber River.”
