WHO

Who can participate in a Study Abroad program?

  • Undergraduates in Architecture and Planning who have completed their third year and will not have graduated by the beginning of the program. First and second years: please plan ahead to take advantage of this opportunity.
  • Undergraduates in Architectural History who have consulted with their advisor.
  • Graduates in Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Architectural History, and Planning who will not have graduated by the beginning of the program.

To study abroad, students must be in academic good standing. Further, to earn degree credit students must have a cumulative GPA at UVa of no less than 2.500 at the point of application or a 2.500 cumulative GPA (again, at UVa) at the end of the term prior to the commencement of study abroad. These standards apply both to direct-study programs and the traditional study abroad programs under auspices of another institution or organization. However, several programs administered by the School of Architecture are competitive, and priority will be given to applicants with a higher GPA. Guidelines for specific programs are as follows:

  • Semester and Exchange programs, including Copenhagen and Cottbus, and other foreign architecture programs: 3.5
  • Summer Session programs, including Beijing and Vicenza, and J-Term programs: 3.0
WHEN

Undergraduates in Architecture and Planning may study abroad in the summer between third and fourth year and/or the fall of the fourth (final) year. Undergraduates in Architectural History may study abroad according to arrangements made after consulting their advisor.

Graduates may study abroad in any summer while a student in the School and during a semester with the permission of the Program Director or chair of the Student’s department or Discipline.

WHERE

While the school sponsors or supports several excellent programs, a student may participate in any university program located anywhere in the world with the permission of the Program Director or Chair of the student's department or discipline. Credits transfer just as if they were earned at any university in the states.
