The Venice Program
Fall 2007
Focus of Study
The Venice Program is a multi-disciplinary course of study examining the landscape, urban form and architecture of Venice and the Veneto through both contemporary and historical lenses. In recent years, the program has focused on the palpable dimensions of physical human experience, the measure and order of the land as a precondition of the city, and the means by which contemporary culture engages this fragile human and natural ecology. This program offers a semester within the graduate curricula to analyze, observe, reflect, imagine and construct the foundations on which design intentions are grounded. Venice provides an ideal setting for examining these issues as the ultimate human-scaled city whose order derives not from the lineaments of human imagination but from the material processes of nature. The urban and natural landscape of the Veneto has recorded the layered traces of human settlement for nearly the entirety of its geological existence, framing critical lessons and challenges for the future.

The Venice Program takes place in the fall semester each year.
