    The solution below clearly explains the behavior in terms of the load on the beam and the deflections of the beam. Many people talked about the stress and strain in the material, rather than the loads and deflection of the beam, such an answer is not completely correct, since behavior at the scale of material may be different than behavior at the scale of the element (the next question addresses this issue as well).



    Note that the calculations in the following solution are used to verify the soltion rather than to find it. The solution is found by reasoning about force balance and moment balance, clearly explained in the verbal answer.
